Throwdown Thursday is a weekly thing (hosted by the Neverending Shelf and thanks to All Things Urban Fantasy who opened my eyes to it) where we tackle books with similar characters, covers, themes, etc. to determine which one rocks more. It is up to YOU to determine the winner.
The existence of promotional items from authors - such as rack cards, bookmarks and cover flats - verse not having them at all were the highlight of last weeks Throwdown. The preference voiced was a united "I'd-have-them-in-a-heartbeat" answer, but not without the continuous struggle on how to display certain items.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week, I am pitting the presence of certain elements of the story depicted on covers against one another. In this case, the characters. The genres coming into play for these comparisons: PR and Dark Fantasy.
Do you gravitate towards covers with a single female present? A male? Or both?
What does the lack of the others presence mean to you? Does it indicate strength, individuality? A solitude of sorts?
'Found wandering in a field as a child, Lee Ross was given a name by the state and placed in a foster home–without anyone realizing she wasn’t entirely human.
All her life, she’s tried to dismiss the odd dreams that have plagued her, dreams of monsters creeping through the night and a man, fighting demons by her side. But the bruises she wakes up with are all too real to ignore...
Then the man from dreams appears in the flesh. His name is Kalen and he insists that her destiny lies in his world, the world of her dreams.
To save their people, he must convince Lee to give everything she knows, follow her heart and cross into the Under Realm, even though once she does, she’ll never be able to return...' -- Through the Veil.

'For too long Maxine Kiss has felt an inexplicable darkness inside her-a force she channels into hunting the demons bent on destroying the human race. But when she finds herself covered in blood and crouched beside her grandfather’s dead body with no memory of what happened, Maxine begins to fear that the darkness has finally consumed her.' -- A Wild Light.
Excerpts available for A Wild Light, Through the Veil, Demon from the Dark and Sin Undone.

'A dangerous demon she can't resist...
Malkom Slaine: tormented by his sordid past and racked by vampiric hungers, he's pushed to the brink by the green-eyed beauty under his guard.
A maddening witch he aches to claim...
Carrow Graie: hiding her own sorrows, she lives only for the next party or prank. Until she meets a tortured warrior worth saving.
Trapped together in a savage prison...
For them to survive, Malkom must unleash both the demon and vampire inside him. When he becomes the nightmare his own people feared, will he lose the woman he craves body and soul?' -- Demon from the Dark.
'HER TOUCH IS DEADLY.
As the only female Seminus demon ever born, master assassin Sinead Donnelly is used to being treated like an outcast. She spent decades enslaved, and now vows she’ll die before she’ll relinquish her freedom again. Then Sin’s innate ability to kill her enemies goes awry: She creates a lethal new werewolf virus that sparks a firestorm of panic and violence.
HIS HUNGER CAN’T BE DENIED.
Half-werewolf, half-vampire Conall Dearghul is charged with bringing in Sin to face punishment for the plague. And she’s no stranger: He’s bound to her by blood, and the one sexual encounter they shared has left him hungering for her raw sensuality. Worse, Sin is the underworld’s most wanted and Con soon learns he’s the only one who can help her . . . and that saving her life might mean sacrificing his own.' -- Sin Undone.
This Throwdown will remain open until 21st July, 2010.
Where does your preference and interpretations of them lie?

I do love a sexy man on a cover, rippling abs and inked up...im easy to please LOL!!
But if there's a girl on the cover it has to be vivid and eye catching to get my attention.
I am in favor of both types of covers, if well done. What I don't like is when the cover really has nothing to do with the story or doesn't look like one of the main characters. But the cover gender somewhat depends on the main characters. When dealing with Kate Daniels series, I expect to see a kick ass version of Kate on the cover. When talking about Black Dagger Brotherhood, I want to see chest (male version). EXCEPT, the next BDB book is about Payne and the side character, Manny. So I'd be all in favor of a strong, warrior female on the front.
You know who has great female covers is Meljean Brooks most recent two Guardian books, Demon Forged and Demon Blood. Excellent covers.
